Buchan Discovery Trail
Stage 1 is now completed – Landscaping and ampitheatre style seating are not completed at the Arts and Cultural Precinct. A history walk showcasing some of our heritage including Quarrying and Mining. The precinct features our rich history in Megafauna along with Interperative signage on the Buchan River “Cocky John Corridor” depicting some of our local animals, ending at the Bluff Reserve.
Thank you to the Gippsland Community Foundation for funding this project and the colloboration of a number of community groups.
The Buchan Discovery Trail aims to leverage the current attraction of the Buchan Caves to build a viable historical, environmental, paleontological and geological experience for all visitors to the Buchan area, building the profile of Buchan as a place of global scientific and tourism significance based on Megafauna finds in the Buchan area.
Stage 2 will see displays of our Megafauna – replica 3D skulls of the Palorchestes, Simosthenurus and Thylacoleo. These exhibits are being provided by Museums Victoria.
Buchan Recreation Reserve redevelopment – Funding from Emergency Recovery Victoria, Community Foundation & LRCI
The Buchan Recreation Reserve Redevelopment has commenced. The Pavilion now has it’s roof on and taking shape. The expected completion date is March 2026.
The Buchan Gelantipy and Districts Renewal Association is working with East Gippsland Shire to secure more funding to enable the project to be completed, cricket nets, playground and realignment of the oval.
The Master Plan is yet to be completed.
Projects in planning
Play Space – the concept designs for the Play Space with Megafauna theme are now completed. Council has advised that the inclusion of the Buchan Community Play Space concept plan can be considered for listing as a 2027/28 onwards project.
Dump Point Council and the BGaDRA have located a suitable site a concept design is expected by the end of July, following that there will be a further 4 weeks of consultation.
Toilet at old Uniting Church – The Jane Davidson Association has been successful in securing funding from Tiny Towns Round 2 to build a toilet. The toilet will also service the Butter Factory.
Suggan Buggan have recieved an FRRR grant to erect a shed so support their preparedness for fires.
Butter Factory have been successful in securing an FRRR grant for removal of tree stumps. This will open up the space between the Butter Factory and the old Uniting Church.
